Speaking up, Opening up and Stand firm

Target group
Recognise this? When people make a request, you tend to say yes when you really shouldn’t. Or in certain situations, you end up not doing what you were actually planning to. Your performance is generally satisfactory, but sometimes the situation seems to take control. You therefore tend to stay clear of awkward situations and conflicts. You may be seeking for ways to be assertive without upsetting relationships with others. This training will help to you to speak up and stand firm. To participate, you should be operating at senior secondary vocational/higher professional educational level.

Course content
This training focuses strongly on practical experience. Based on several brief theoretical presentations, you will practice extensively using cases from your own professional background and experience. The course is run by two trainers, both experts in behavioural change and assertiveness training.

The course will include exercises in the following areas:

  • Your current situation: would you like to move on? 
  • ‘I’ or ‘You’: How can you assess your own progress?
  • Subtle influences
  • Shame: a reason to hide or to come out
  • Me and the others
  • The danger of behaving sub-assertively in ‘unimportant’ situations
  • Getting yourself into (and getting out of ) predicaments
  • Sweet-talking and insisting
  • Dotting the ‘i’s and crossing the ‘t’s
